7 Critical Issues In Education

Education has remained one of the most evolving areas in our society. This is attributable to various dynamics such as the social and technological changes. These dynamics play a huge role in transforming education into a more resourceful tool for human empowerment.

Indeed, they form the basis of some of the most critical issues in education and in this article, we shall discuss the 7 critical issues affecting education in a bid to understanding how we can go about each one of them for the betterment of our intellectual standards.

Issue no.7 -Poverty

The first of the 7 critical issues in education is poverty. Many governments around the world have come up with ambitious plans to try and achieve the Millennium Development Goals and in their blueprints, education features as one of the noble goals.

However, there is still a long way to go since there appears not to be a serious commitment towards the achievement of this goal. This is seen in various ways such as the inadequate allocation of budgets to this sector, leaving children from poor backgrounds at the mercies of their parent who normally cannot afford the hefty fees.

Issue no. 6 – Politics

Politics is pretty much a critical issue in education and this normally comes into play during electoral campaigns. There is the tendency of politicians [especially those aspiring for political seats as opposed to the incumbents] to try and paint a picture of the existing education system in dire need of restructuring.

This, therefore, leaves the real stakeholders asking themselves what they may not be doing right and as a result, may make adjustments that are totally unnecessary. When these politicians get elected, they may alter the curriculums, thereby creating a disturbance in the already established academic order.

Issue no. 5 – Social Media

The advent of social media sure came with its fair share of blessings and one of these is in the education sector. Today, learners and teachers are able to create professional learning networks through their social media presence.

These networks enable them to share resources and create a virtual information interchange platform that was never seen before.

Issue no. 4 –High Stakes Testing

This issue has been a subject of debate for a very long time as many opponents argue it is a little subjective. This is because high stakes testing tries to advance the notion that a student is only as good if he beats his fellow student in a test [something that is not entirely true].

There is need for learning institutions to adopt more favorable testing methods so as to assess the progress of students as this method has proven to be wanting in many ways.

Issue no. 3 – School Leadership

We can hardly speak of critical issues in schools and forget this. School leadership is an integral part of the learning process. It is a way of inculcating the culture of discipline and respect for the rule of law among learners.

It cannot be forgotten that in the case of the leaders, it also adds in the development of certain social skills such as advocacy, management etc.

Issue no. 2 –Pre-service Technical Programs

These are programs meant to empower trained teachers so they can better cope with the environment in the various learning institutions where they are posted. It is important to note that a graduate may have all the requisite academic qualifications but fail to cope up with the particular demands of the school environment where they are posted.

Therefore, there is need to ensure these programs are flexible enough to capture the changing landscapes of our learning institutions. A case in point is training that focuses on dealing with learners from hardship or war-torn areas.

Issue no. 1 – Technology

It cannot be forgotten that technology has caused massive transformation in nearly all facets of life, and the education sector is no exception. We are slowly phasing out books and embracing iPads, Tablets and suchlike technological gadgets.

It is important, however, that we ensure the transition is not rushed and that it happens in an all-inclusive manner. This can be achieved by ensuring all the learners have access to the specific gadget touted to be introduced so all can be equally advantaged.
